Mistakes to avoid by new Amazon Sellers

New sellers on Amazon make some mistakes that affect their selling ability. Since they make these mistakes early on in their engagement with Amazon, they don’t get success, and it’s more likely they will quit Amazon in few months after starting. Here we suggest few mistakes that new sellers should avoid.

1. Enter an over saturated niche category: New seller should do some basic research about the categories they intend to sell their products in. They should avoid such categories that are high competitive and highly saturated. For new sellers we recommend to start with categories with low competition, light weight and small products, less seasonality.

2. Go for Low Pricing: New sellers should avoid selling at low prices. It’s highly likely that will lose money with low pricing. Within few months they will realize that they lost money on selling such items. This is one of the main reasons that many sellers quit Amazon as they don’t make money. Sellers should consider all costs (Product costs, amazon selling charges, return and refund costs, damaged product costs, shipping costs, operations costs and desired margin) while calculating the actual cost of the product and price accordingly.

3. Have high shipping costs: Many new sellers who choose the self-ship option tend to charge high shipping costs. This tactic can discourage buyers to buy from such sellers. So, avoid having high shipping costs

4. Have bad quality listings: Quality of listing plays a big role in the conversion of sales. Many new sellers tend to miss this point. They quickly list products with poor images and dont add full details wrt product features. This is an area that sellers should focus on and ensure that listings are of good quality.

5. Sell bad products: Selling bad products is a clear no-no. Sooner or later it will get the sellers in trouble. So, avoid selling any product that has bad quality. Identify and sell only good products

6. Ignore customer service: Customers may have problems with your product and may raise complaints. Ensure you attend to all problems promptly and solve all the problems. If there are too many complaints against you, chances are Amazon will block your listing or your account completely.

7. Fail to fulfil orders on time: Sometimes new sellers may not understand the importance of fulfilling orders promptly. Amazon measures the lead time to fulfil and wants all sellers to fulfil orders within the defined timelines. So, we suggest sellers promptly fulfil the orders.

8. Mismatch in Inventory status: New sellers don’t start with an inventory tool and sometimes there may be cases where the product is out of stock but you get amazon orders for the same product. This is a mistake to highly avoid and can get sellers into serious trouble as Amazon wants all sellers to have cancelled orders to be less than 2%. So, keeping track of inventory is very essential.

If above points are kept in mind by new amazon sellers they can weather the initial hicupps that can occur when starting selling on amazon, and build on their business to greater success.
